Exploring behavioural insights to Poor Treatment Response and Outcomes in Bedaquiline-Based Treatment Regimens for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in South Africa (PROBe DR-TB) -among recipients of care and healthcare providers

Study objective: To describe perceptions of behavioural facilitators and barriers to successful treatment of Rifampicin-Resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) in Gauteng Province, South Africa among people with RR-TB and healthcare providers at DR-TB treatment facilities.

 

 

Evaluation description: An exploratory study using a survey, focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs) to generate behavioural insights from adult RR-TB care recipients and healthcare providers at DR-TB sites.

 

Study outcomes: 

  • Generate/ verify insights regarding healthcare provider and recipient of care experiences and journeys in the RR-TB care cascade
  • Contexualise potential barriers, enablers and motivating factors to treatment completion

 

Study site: Selected DR-TB treatment facilities in Gauteng

 

 

Target population:

People initiated on RR-TB treatment

Healthcare providers giving care to RR-TB care recipients

 

 

Sample size & analysis: 

  • 10 healthcare providers
  • 20 care recipients

 

Thematic analysis will be conducted to develop codes and identify themes. Design thinking tools will be used to map findings.

 

Duration: 6 months
